Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Navatek is a world leader in the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to the design of ship hulls and underwater lifting bodies. Navatek employs panel codes and a RANS (Reynolds Average Navier Stokes) code to perform these analyses. Unique to Navatek is a history of large-scale verification sea trials that have provided insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the various CFD tools like USAERO and CFX.

CFD CAPABILITIES

  • LIFT
  • DRAG
  • CAVITATION
  • FLOW VISUALIZATION
  • FREE SURFACE EFFECTS
  • SEPARATED FLOW
  • MOTIONS

In addition to hydrodynamic predictions, seakeeping predictions can be made using the SAIC-provided LAMP (Large Amplitude Motion Program) software. All of these codes require tremendous computing power to obtain results in a timely manner. Navatek uses a 128 processor computer cluster to perform the “number crunching” required by these codes. Navatek’s experience in employing these tools on advanced hull forms is unique in the world of ship design.
